Urban Pipeline Program (UPP)
University of Illinois at Chicago, College of Pharmacy
The UIC College of Pharmacy Urban Pathway Program (UPP) is an eight-week comprehensive academic, experiential, and mentoring summer enrichment program. Guiding the program is the “Theoretical and Conceptual Framework Model for Success” (Awe and Bauman, 2010) that was developed by drawing from the literature on higher education student success and further informed by the Educational Policy Institute’s Pathways to College Network Framework. The College partners with Chicago Public School (CPS), Rich Township District 227, and CVS Pharmacy in order to offer this robust program.
Program Components
Primary Areas of Focus
- Recruitment (i.e. increasing awareness of and/or stimulating interest in health profession careers and degree programs
- Retention or completion of health professions degree programs (support for those currently enrolled)
Desired Outcomes
Students are tracked longitudinally. One of the methods for accomplishing this is by forming a Pre-Pharmacy club that brings the students back to the college to continue with the pharmacy socialization process through increased interaction with faculty and student mentors.

Underrepresented racial and/or ethnic background
The Urban Health Program (UHP) was established in 1978, to recruit and support students from underrepresented minority groups, specifically African Americans/Black, Latinx, and American Indians, into graduate and professional degree programs leading to health related careers. The ultimate goal of the program is to train a cadre of underrepresented health professionals dedicated to improving the quality and availability of healthcare in undeserved urban areas.
